Conaway is incredibly smart, completely devoted, and of course, ridiculously handsome! He stormed into my life and took over -- wrapping me around his 8-week-old paw. He quickly decided I had a lot to learn about dogs in general and Chinooks in particular, and appointed himself my teacher. Conaway has taught me about dogs, and parks, realistic expectations, the beauty of simple things, the virtue of hard work, the value of an honest and open heart, and the integrity of learning from a mistake instead of dwelling on it. He also taught me about baby locks (to keep smart dogs out of the pantry), dog-safe garbage cans, just how irritating squirrels actually are, the necessity of a strong recall, and the price of veterinary medicine.
Conaway makes sure I never doubt for a minute how much he loves me -- from daily face washes, wags, and cuddles to the subtler cues. When he thinks I am not getting enough sleep, he wakes up 5-10 minutes BEFORE my alarm goes off in the morning and moves from his spot at the foot of the bed to lie alongside me between me and the alarm. Unfortunately, even with his "protection" I still have to answer its morning call. I do appreciate his thought, though!
Conaway is so attuned to what I am thinking and feeling that he knows what I want or need often before I do. I can't, and don't want, to remember what it was like before he was in my life, trying to clear my yard of squirrels, scaring away the deer, and enthusiastically greeting any visitors within reach of his long tongue.
